The revered Flying Fortress was primarily utilized by the U.S. Air Force in WWII in strategic bombing campaigns. The E model was the first in the series to employ a gunner’s position as a result of the extended tail section. To combat the additional weight of more machine gun positions and the lager vertical and horizontal stabilizers, it was also retrofitted with more powerful Wright R-1820 engines.
